Which is The Better Roofing System? TPO, EPDM or PVC

If your commercial roof has reached the end of its lifespan, what type of roofing system is best for your flat roof? There are several options to choose from, including thermoplastic polyolefin roofing, or TPO roofing, ethylene propylene diene monomer roofing, or EPDM roofing, and polyvinyl chloride roofing, or PVC roofing. Each roofing system comes with its own set of pros and cons. To choose the right option, you’ll need to consider your priorities. 

Ease of Installation

Why does ease of installation matter? A tricky installation process means that the install will take longer. It’s also associated with an increased risk of human error, and improperly attached seams are the cause of most leaks. While it’s always wise to opt for an experienced roofing contractor, This experience becomes essential when installation is complicated. An EPDM roof is the easiest to install. No specialized equipment is required. Both TPO and PVC roofing feature seams that need to be heat-welded.

Energy Efficiency

  • As a rule of thumb, an EPDM roof will require more routine maintenance than a PVC or TPO roof because its seams are sealed with adhesives instead of welded. However, correctly maintained EPDM roofs could last 25 years.
  • A PVC roof requires little maintenance, and if an issue develops, new material can be welded to it for a reliable PVC roofs can have lifespans of more than 30 years.
  • What about TPO roofs? Their life expectancy is hard to judge. They’re a relatively new option, and several versions are in use. It’s worth noting that maintenance and repairs can be challenging with TPO roofs because it isn’t always possible to weld new material into place.
